Kevin “Horikema” Marr, a San Francisco Bay Area native, began his career with a tough, old fashioned apprenticeship that was cut short when his mentor decided to move. This accelerated Kevin’s career as he took over ownership of Godspeed Tattoo in San Mateo. After 18 years of running a shop, he decided to embark on a new journey and in 2016 he made the move to San Francisco to open a private studio.
Kevin has focussed his career in the art of Japanese tattooing. His knowledge of Japanese tattooing has allowed him to create his own modern artistic approach while still maintaining traditional elements and timeless images. He feels that tattoos should be beautiful and flow with the body and look like it is part of the person; almost coming from within them.
Kevin’s dedication and love for Japanese tattooing eventually led him to Japan in pursuit of learning more about the culture and the art. Within his numerous trips, Kevin completed his own bodysuit by world renown tattooers. In the process of getting tattooed he became friends with Master Horiyoshi III, who has been a great source of knowledge, work ethic and creative inspiration. Master Horiyoshi III eventually bestowed Kevin the Japanese name, “Horikema”. Receiving this title has been a huge honor, as it is given in recognition of his commitment to upholding the traditions of Japanese tattooing.
Outside of San Francisco, Kevin works domestically and internationally as a guest artist at various tattoo shops and in attendance of numerous tattoo conventions.
